Yeezy Taught You

Suggestion: Read this while listening to False Prophets by J.Cole

For those of you who have been Yeezy stans since day 1, I'm sure you're feeling really conflicted right about now. Your boy is fresh out of a psychiatric hold and already posing with the 2016 President-elect. You know, the guy who among an array of other alarming issues supports stop and frisk and who actively reinforces stereotypes of Black people. Yeah, that guy.

I'd like to take this opportunity of Kanye's clear disgrace to his people to make a point about celebrity culture and our society's subsequent obsession with it.

Kanye West doesn't actually care about you, but you care a whole lot about him.

You're probably feeling like Kanye has betrayed the community he belongs to, and in some ways he has.

Obviously, this is a one-sided relationship but for reasons you yourself cannot fully express you will undoubtedly stick around. You'll continue to put money into his pockets. You'll continue to send him your prayers. And you'll continue to expect something in return, but if the featured image in this post serves as any type of lesson it's that this man will do whatever he damn well wants even if that means neglecting and disrespecting your ethics.

He doesn't owe you anything.

Please understand that.

You're probably feeling like Kanye has betrayed the community he belongs to, and in some ways he has. Black people are the ones who have been holding him down since 04' when he dropped Jesus Walks, but have refused to accept that he's not that guy anymore. The man who called out President Bush and FEMA for overlooking the desperate situation of low-income residents in Nola after Hurricane Katrina IS NOT the man chillin' with Trump. That Kanye is loonngggggg gone.

It is no surprise that Kanye's decisions as of late have offended his most dedicated fans, but I think the sentiment he has provoked in many people transcends race and culture. The evolution of Kanye can serve as an example of how: a) celebrities have minds of their own s b) celebrities are people and people will always work in their own self-interest, not yours c) it's imperative you invest your money in shit that will capacitate you and your interests (not yeezy's) d) senseless idolization is a problem in American culture.

Do you sweetheart. Do you.
