Yo Soy Collection

Within the spectrum of Latina representation, Afro-Latina's, in particular, are not openly celebrated. I'd argue that this stems from the assumption that Latina's are only of European descent, but if you've traveled, watched movies outside of the Hollywood radar, dabbled into anthropology, or talked to anyone from Latin America you'd know this is far from the truth. But as an Afro-Latina myself I've struggled with finding much mention about the sub-group I happen to fall into, so stumbling across the Yo Soy Collection on Instagram was a pleasant surprise!

Alexis Joanna, a proud Latina herself, created a jewelry line for proud Latina's and it has honestly become a staple in my wardrobe. I think there's something special about finding pieces of clothing and jewelry that speak to you. The Yo Soy Collection does that for me. I recently wore my necklaces while in Asia and encountered both the "TU eres Latina?!" and "What is Afro-Latina?" reactions, and each time I was satisfied knowing that: a) I just opened someone's eyes to the idea that not all Latina's fit within eurocentric beauty standards b) being Afro-Latina is nothing to be ashamed about.

With all of this in mind, you have to check out alexisjoannajewelry.com to order your statement piece from her Yo Soy Collection (also check out her Caribeña tees, I'm obssesed with mine)! Whether you're caramelo, canela, blanquita, or indiecita Alexis has you covered!

Keep up with this empowering she-preneur by following her on Instagram @alexisjoannajewelry or by contacting her directly at [email protected]!
