The Truth About Celebrity Worship
America loves celebrities. But we don’t use celebrities as inspiration to ignite our own creativity, we are too busy worshipping them. The allure of fame and wealth have officially blinded our society, making it incapable to seeing the truth.I’ve asked myself countless questions on how we got here. Is it because our collective esteem is low? Is it because as a society we were never equipped with the skills to manage the hardships of life, so we assume that money and fame will fix everything? Is it because we’re too afraid to design our own lives, so when we see people actually doing it we’re turned on by their audacity? I think it’s a combination of it all, plus another key element. Art.They say Art is decoration for the soul. Collectively, we’ve shied away from being the decorators of our own realities. Instead, we’ve turned to celebrities to provide the decor for us. We expect them to do all the work of making our souls happy in exchange for our worship. Making the soul happy is our life’s mission, so once we think someone can do it for us, giving them our hard earned money, energy, and attention is the least we can do...right?
We worship celebrities because we expect them to always have our own interest at heart, but all they’re doing is creating their own Art. It’s not their responsibility to do that on our behalf.
Sure, I guess. If you just want to hand over your individuality and freedom of expression. How can this be real?! How did it become normal for this behavior to take precedent? Why isn’t there a push for all of us to be the chefs of our own soul food? Why did we hand over such a precious responsibility to people who don’t even know who we are? To people who see us only as dollar signs. We’ve worshipped people like Kanye West and many others who’ve let us down time and time again. They’ve said and done things that shake us to our core for weeks, but it’s because we gave them the space to do it in the first place. We forgot that they were merely human. It’s time to learn to finally learn this lesson. We worship celebrities because we expect them to always have our own interest at heart, but all they’re doing is creating their own Art. It’s not their responsibility to do that on our behalf. We have to create our own Art.Our own narratives. Our own modes of expression. Our own decor. Our own soul food.
